WPATH and The Standards of Care
World Professional Association for Transgender Health
Dr. Harry Benjamin was a pioneering physician in the care of gender dysphoric individuals. After being introduced to a young patient in 1948 through Alfred Kinsey, Benjamin recognized a condition distinct from transvestism and began treating the child with estrogen, which had a calming effect. This case led him to coin the term “transsexualism” in 1954. Over the years, he collaborated with specialists to treat hundreds of patients with compassion and care, often without accepting payment. His work laid the foundation for gender-affirming medical treatment and earned him deep respect and lasting gratitude from those he helped.
